About This Coin
Documenting the final experimental phase of one of the most important private minting operations in the American West, the 1861 Clark, Gruber & Co. Patterns, Die Trials, and Restrikes represent pieces produced during the Denver firm's transition from private coinage to government operation. Clark, Gruber & Company, founded by Austin M. Clark and Milton E. Clark with partner Emanuel H. Gruber, established a private mint in Denver in 1860 to serve the Pike's Peak gold mining region. Their regular-issue gold coins in $2.50, $5, $10, and $20 denominations were widely accepted in Colorado Territory commerce. The 1861 patterns and die trials represent experiments with new designs and denominations conducted during the firm's final year of private operation — the U.S. government purchased the Clark, Gruber facility in 1862, intending to convert it into a branch mint (though it ultimately became the Denver Assay Office instead). Restrikes from original Clark, Gruber dies were produced at later dates, likely for the collector market. Within the Colorado Gold (1860-1861) series, these non-circulation pieces provide insight into the firm's ambitions and technical capabilities during a pivotal year when Colorado's gold production demanded increasingly sophisticated monetary infrastructure. A notable auction result reached $17K in CH UNC grade at Stack's.
