About This Coin
Founded by Austin M. Clark, Milton E. Clark, and Emanuel Henry Gruber, the firm established a private mint in Denver during the Pikes Peak gold rush, producing gold coins in $2.50, $5, $10, and $20 denominations beginning in 1860. Struck in gold at approximately .900 fineness with reeded edge, these pieces featured distinctive designs including a Pikes Peak depiction on the $5 — one of the most iconic images in territorial gold coinage. The firm's operations were remarkably professional for a frontier enterprise, producing coins that were generally full weight, earning merchant trust throughout Colorado Territory. A notable result of $690,000 in MS64 at Heritage Auctions reflects intense collector demand. The government purchased Clark, Gruber's facilities in 1862 for $25,000 to convert them into a federal assay office, ending one of the most successful private minting ventures in American history. The 1860 issues represent the inaugural year, when the firm struck its first coins to fill the desperate need for reliable money in booming Colorado mining camps.
