Description
Part of the Large Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1856-1889 series, the 1860 (S) Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar from the San Francisco Mint. With a mintage of 13,000, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 25% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a larger, more detailed head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. Charlotte struck its final gold dollars before the Civil War. The 1860-D (estimated 1,000 struck) is extremely rare. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $580 to $7.4K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
