(1860) Medal Lovett Tomb Baker-128A
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The undated medal Baker-128A, known as "Lovett's Tomb," features a depiction of George Washington's Tomb at Mount Vernon. The tomb was a pilgrimage destination for Americans from the earliest years after Washington's death in 1799, and images of the tomb appeared on medals, prints, and decorative objects throughout the nineteenth century. The Lovett attribution connects this piece to the prominent family of Philadelphia die sinkers. The tomb at Mount Vernon was rebuilt in 1831 to replace the original deteriorating vault, and the new tomb became one of the most depicted American architectural subjects. Lovett's rendering of the tomb on Baker-128A captures the neoclassical entrance with its inscribed marble slab bearing the Biblical quotation "I am the Resurrection and the Life." Baker-128A is an important piece in the subcategory of Washington tomb and Mount Vernon medals, which document American pilgrimage traditions and memorial culture.
