A mule die clash is visible on this 1857 Flying Eagle cent. A mule die clash occurs when a die from one denomination strikes against a die from a different denomination without a planchet between them, transferring design elements from the other denomination's die. In this case, elements of a $20 gold double eagle die are clashed onto the obverse of the Flying Eagle cent. This variety is cataloged as FS-403 (Fivaz-Stanton). The 1857 Flying Eagle cent was the first small cent produced by the U.S. Mint, and mule die clashes with gold coin dies are exceptionally rare and dramatic errors.
