Description
The 1856 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 collection. The U.S. Mint produced 384,240 examples, making this the highest mintage among 5 variants, accounting for 79% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Final year of Dahlonega quarter eagle production. The 1856-D is a scarce late Southern mint issue. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $1.8K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7777.
