Description
A Gold Quarter Eagle from the Charlotte Mint, the 1856 (C) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle belongs to the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 7,913, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 5 mint variants by mintage, with 2% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Final year of Dahlonega quarter eagle production. The 1856-D is a scarce late Southern mint issue. Charlotte's North Carolina mint operated from 1838 to 1861, striking gold coins from regional deposits — all Charlotte mint coins are scarce today. Estimated market value ranges from $3.4K to $35K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7778.
