Description
The 1855 (D) Liberty Gold Dollar represents a Dahlonega Mint issue from the Small Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1854-1856 series. With a mintage of 1,811, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 4 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a smaller head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. The 1855-C (Charlotte, mintage 9,803) and 1855-D (Dahlonega, mintage 1,811) are major rarities. The 1855-D is one of the rarest regular-issue U.S. gold coins. The Dahlonega Mint in Georgia struck gold coins from 1838 until its closure at the start of the Civil War in 1861. Estimated market value ranges from $22K to $155K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7534.
