Description

The 1855 (C) Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar minted at the Charlotte Mint, within the Small Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1854-1856 series. With a mintage of 9,803, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 1% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a smaller head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. The 1855-C (Charlotte, mintage 9,803) and 1855-D (Dahlonega, mintage 1,811) are major rarities. The 1855-D is one of the rarest regular-issue U.S. gold coins. Coined at the Charlotte Mint, a gold-only facility that operated in North Carolina for just 23 years before the Civil War ended its production.
