The 1854 (D) Indian Princess Three Dollar was struck at the Dahlonega Mint as a dollar in the Indian Princess Three Dollars 1854-1889 series. With a mintage of 1,120, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess, similar to but distinct from the gold dollar design and the reverse displays a wreath of tobacco, wheat, corn, and cotton enclosing the denomination 3 DOLLARS and date. First year of the three dollar denomination. Philadelphia, Dahlonega, and New Orleans all struck coins. The 1854-D (mintage 1,120) is a major rarity. Coined at the Dahlonega Mint, a small Georgia facility that produced gold coins from local deposits for just 23 years before the Civil War.
