Description
The 1849 (D) Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar produced at the Dahlonega Mint as part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 21,588, this is a scarce issue — ranked 4th of 6 mint variants by mintage, with 2% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. First year of the gold dollar. Both Open Wreath and Close Wreath varieties exist at Philadelphia. The 1849-C Open Wreath is a key date from the Charlotte Mint. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $2.6K to $22K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7507.
