Description
Part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series, the 1849 (C) Liberty Gold Dollar - Open Wreath is a Gold Dollar from the Charlotte Mint. With a mintage of 11,634, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 6 mint variants by mintage, with 1% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. First year of the gold dollar. Both Open Wreath and Close Wreath varieties exist at Philadelphia. The 1849-C Open Wreath is a key date from the Charlotte Mint. Charlotte's North Carolina mint operated from 1838 to 1861, striking gold coins from regional deposits — all Charlotte mint coins are scarce today. Estimated market value ranges from $279K to $938K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
