CU-1C-1844-01 Rim Cud

Description

Struck from an obverse die exhibiting the well-known 44/81 repunched date — where digits of an earlier date remain faintly visible beneath the final 1844 — this rim cud combines two distinct die anomalies on a single Braided Hair cent. The Cuds on Coins catalog records it as CU-1C-1844-01 with no additional cross-references. The 44/81 overdate (more precisely a repunched date involving repositioned digits) places this coin within a subset of Braided Hair cents where the date punch was applied imprecisely, and the subsequent development of a rim cud on the same die adds a layer of die-failure documentation. Christian Gobrecht's Braided Hair obverse, used from 1839 through the end of the large cent series in 1857, arranges thirteen stars around Liberty's portrait with the date below, and the tight spacing of design elements at the periphery creates structurally thin die walls vulnerable to fracture. The 1844 Philadelphia mintage of approximately 2.4 million large cents consumed numerous die pairs, and the convergence of a repunched date with a rim cud on the same working die makes CU-1C-1844-01 a particularly interesting specimen for die-state researchers studying the full lifecycle of individual obverse dies in the pre-Civil War era.
