Description
This die clash variety on an 1835 Classic Head Half Cent preserves evidence of a striking accident where the obverse and reverse dies contacted each other without a planchet between them, transferring elements of each die's design onto the opposing die surface in mirror-image relief. On the obverse, clash marks from the reverse wreath are visible in front of Liberty's neck and face — raised impressions of wreath leaves and stems that appear in the open field area where no design elements normally exist. The Classic Head Half Cent, designed by John Reich and produced from 1809 through 1836, features a left-facing bust of Liberty wearing a ribbon-bound cap on the obverse and a wreath encircling the denomination on the reverse. The 1835 issue had a mintage of 398,000 pieces struck at the Philadelphia Mint in pure copper, weighing approximately 5.44 grams at 23.5 mm diameter. Die clashes on early copper coinage are particularly significant because the relatively soft copper planchets and the handmade die production methods of the early 19th century meant that clashed dies often continued in service for extended periods before replacement, potentially producing substantial populations of clash-marked coins from a single incident. The wreath-in-field clash pattern visible on this variety is one of the more common configurations on half cents, as the large wreath design occupies much of the reverse die face and readily transfers onto the opposing die during unprotected contact. Collectors of early American copper prize die clash varieties for the production insights they provide.
