Description

Bearing witness to nearly two centuries of American coinage history, this 1832 Capped Bust Dime cud represents one of the earliest dime die failures in the Cuds on Coins census. Cataloged as CU-10c-1832-01R, the variety features a cud error — a major die break at the rim where a piece of the die fractured and separated, leaving a raised featureless blob at the coin's edge. The Capped Bust Dime series, designed by John Reich and produced from 1809 to 1837, was struck on small planchets using hand-operated screw presses that placed enormous localized stress on the dies. This mechanical stress, combined with the metallurgical limitations of early nineteenth-century die steel, made rim breaks a recurring production hazard. The R suffix indicates this cud appears on the reverse. Early American dime cuds are scarce survivors because the small denomination meant these coins circulated heavily, and specimens with major die breaks were not typically preserved by contemporary collectors who lacked the variety-collecting framework that emerged in later generations.
