Description
Part of the Capped Head to Left Quarter Eagles 1821-1834 series, the 1826 Capped Head to Left Quarter Eagle - 1826/6 is a Gold Quarter Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of 760, this is an extremely rare issue. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a cap with curls of hair beneath and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Transitional year — the quarter eagle was reduced in diameter from 20mm to 18.2mm, creating a major subtype. Estimated market value ranges from $12K to $78K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 4.37 grams, 18.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7665.
