Description
Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1831 Capped Head to Left Quarter Eagle is part of the Capped Head to Left Quarter Eagles 1821-1834 series. With a mintage of 4,520, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a cap with curls of hair beneath and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Mintage approximately 4,520. All reduced-size issues are collected as a distinct subtype. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $7.6K to $31K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 4.37 grams, 18.2 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
