The 1823 Capped Bust Quarter is a United States quarter from the Capped Bust Quarters 1815-1838 series — 7th of 19 years in the series. In 1823, coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a combined mintage of 17,801. This represents the second-lowest annual mintage in the series, below the series median of 252,405. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1823/2 overdate is one of the classic rarities of the Capped Bust Quarter series, with the "3" clearly punched over a "2" in the date. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 6.74 grams, 27.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Produced 4 years before the celebrated 1827 key date. Across its variants, estimated values range from $54K to $438K depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $397K in PR64 grade at Heritage Auctions.
