Description
Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1823 Capped Bust Quarter - 1823/2 is part of the Capped Bust Quarters 1815-1838 series. With a mintage of 17,800, this is an extremely rare issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1823/2 overdate is one of the classic rarities of the Capped Bust Quarter series, with the "3" clearly punched over a "2" in the date. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $54K to $438K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 6.74 grams, 27.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #5334.
