1776 Continental Currency Numismatic Knights - Copper Dollar
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Produced by the Numismatic Knights collector organization as a modern copper restrike, this piece reproduces the iconic 1776 Continental Currency dollar design as a commemorative item. Clearly distinguishable from original 1776 dollars, Numismatic Knights restrikes are collected as modern memorabilia of one of America's most significant coin designs. The original, authorized by the Continental Congress with designs attributed to Benjamin Franklin, features the sundial with FUGIO and CONTINENTAL CURRENCY on the obverse, and thirteen interlocking rings with WE ARE ONE on the reverse. The copper composition differs from original pewter, brass, and silver strikings, and modern production methods produce noticeably different strike quality and planchet character. Collector organizations produced commemorative restrikes during the mid-twentieth century as club souvenirs, convention pieces, or fundraising items. While carrying no rarity comparable to originals, these restrikes serve educational and commemorative functions, introducing collectors to the Continental Currency design and providing affordable examples for study. The Newman reference catalogs these separately from original issues.
