Rock Legend Rick Springfield's Gold Coin Collection Sold at Stack's Bowers 2025
When "Jessie's Girl" Meets Numismatics
In August 2025, Stack's Bowers Galleries presented the Rick Springfield Collection of U.S. Gold Coins at their Summer Global Showcase Auction in Costa Mesa, California. The Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and actor — best known for the 1981 hit "Jessie's Girl" — turned out to be a serious numismatist with a world-class gold type set spanning early American coinage.
The Collection
Springfield's collection comprised approximately three dozen rare U.S. gold coins, assembled as a comprehensive type set representing major design types from the late 18th century through the early 20th century. Key highlights included:
- 1879 Flowing Hair Stella (Judd-1635) — Proof-65 (PCGS). The four-dollar gold "Stella" pattern is one of the most famous and desirable U.S. patterns.
- 1907 High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle — MS-67+ (PCGS). The coin widely considered the most beautiful in American history, in superb gem condition.
- 1796/5 Half Eagle — MS-63 (NGC). One of the earliest U.S. gold coins, with only 4 graded higher by NGC.
- 1806/4 Quarter Eagle — MS-64 (NGC). The sole finest known example of this overdate.
- 1808 Large Draped Bust Quarter Eagle — A key early gold type coin from Springfield's comprehensive collection.
- 1796 Capped Bust Right Quarter Eagle, No Stars — AU-50 (PCGS). From the first year of U.S. quarter eagle production.
The combined Rarities Night and Springfield Collection sessions realized nearly $31 million.

Why Celebrity Collections Matter
Celebrity provenance doesn't inherently make a coin more valuable, but it does serve numismatics in important ways:
- It brings attention to the hobby. Springfield's auction was covered by mainstream media outlets (Stereogum, Rob Report) that rarely cover coin sales.
- It demonstrates that collecting is serious. Springfield didn't casually accumulate coins — he assembled a curated type set with connoisseur-level selections.
- It creates provenance. Future owners of Springfield Collection coins will have documented ownership history, which can add interest (and modest premium) at resale.
In a fun touch, the buyer of the top lot received two tickets and VIP backstage passes to a Rick Springfield concert in the city of their choice.
