No Date Fugio Cent - American Congress Restrike Copper
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Bearing the historically significant "American Congress" legend rather than the standard "United States," this undated copper restrike preserves one of the earliest design concepts for the Fugio cent series. The American Congress inscription appears on dies representing an initial design phase before "United States" was adopted, making pieces from these dies among the most sought-after in the Fugio cent field. This copper restrike was produced during the New Haven restrike period (late 1850s to 1860s), when original or copied Fugio dies were rediscovered in New Haven, Connecticut. American Congress restrikes occupy a fascinating position: not original colonial strikes, yet produced from dies carrying genuine historical significance. The absence of a date distinguishes them from standard 1787-dated Fugio cents, connecting them to the developmental period before final design specifications were established. Struck in copper — the same metal as original Fugio production — these restrikes can be distinguished from hypothetical originals by their sharper strike and mid-nineteenth-century planchet characteristics. American Congress restrikes are very rare.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. American Congress restrikes are among the scarcest Fugio-related pieces.
