J.S. Ormsby operated as one of the earliest private gold coiners in Gold Rush-era Sacramento, California, producing extremely rare gold pieces in 1849 during the chaotic initial months when miners and merchants desperately needed a reliable medium of exchange. Ormsby pieces are among the rarest of all California private gold issues, with only a handful of confirmed survivors known to exist across all denominations, making any appearance at auction a major numismatic event.
