About This Coin

Among the more obscure ventures in the California Gold series, the Ithaca Mining Company issued private coinage in 1849 during the earliest frenzy of the Gold Rush, when miners flooding into California created urgent demand for coined money that the distant Philadelphia Mint could not satisfy. Organized in Ithaca, New York, the company exemplified Eastern-backed enterprises that mobilized capital for the goldfields, issuing their own coins as a practical means of converting raw gold into a standardized medium of exchange. Struck in copper with a 27 mm diameter and plain edge, surviving specimens belong to the broader California Gold (1849-1855) series documenting the remarkable array of private mints, assay offices, and mining firms that filled the monetary vacuum in the American West. These issues circulated alongside Moffat & Company, Templeton Reid, and other better-known private coinages before the San Francisco Mint opened in 1854. The Ithaca Mining Company's coins are notable for their Eastern origins and for documenting the speculative enthusiasm that gripped communities far from California, as investors across the nation sought to profit from the unprecedented gold discoveries at Sutter's Mill.
