About This Coin
The Immune Columbia coins bear the Latin legend IMMUNIS COLUMBIA, meaning "Columbia (America) is free" or "immune from tyranny." The 1785 issues are extremely rare pattern coins struck in copper, silver, and gold, representing some of the earliest proposals for a national American coinage. Varieties include blunt rays, pointed rays, extra star, and mulings with Vermont and George III obverse dies. The 1787 Immunis Columbia pieces are more available copper halfpennies featuring a seated Liberty obverse and eagle reverse, existing in plain edge, ornamented edge, and broad flan variants. The series bridges the gap between experimental colonial coinage and the eventual establishment of the United States Mint in 1792.
