About This Coin

Predating the formal U.S. commemorative coin program that began in 1892 with the Columbian half dollar, the so-called dollar commemoratives of 1826-1869 represent the earliest sustained American tradition of striking dollar-sized medals to mark important national events, anniversaries, and cultural milestones. This period opened with the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 1826 and extended through the post-Civil War era, encompassing medals honoring the Erie Canal completion, the Washington Monument construction, presidential inaugurations and memorials, and the achievements of the early republic. These pieces were produced by a mix of the United States Mint (acting in its medal-making capacity), private die sinkers such as Charles Cushing Wright and Anthony Paquet, and commercial firms responding to public demand for commemorative keepsakes. Metal compositions range from silver and bronze to white metal and copper, with sizes conforming to the approximately 33-45 millimeter "dollar" format that gave the so-called dollar category its name. A notable auction result reached $17,000 in SP64 grade at Stack's Bowers, reflecting the strong collector interest in early American commemorative material that predates the familiar congressional commemorative coin series. The Hibler-Kappen catalog assigns HK numbers to these pieces, providing the standard collecting framework. Artistic quality varies considerably — from the accomplished neoclassical work of U.S. Mint engravers to simpler commercial productions — and collectors often find that the historical narratives embedded in these early commemoratives provide a richness of context that enhances the collecting experience beyond the purely numismatic dimension.
