About This Coin

Operating in San Francisco during the early Gold Rush, Dubosq & Company produced gold coins that rank among the rarest and most valuable California private gold issues. Theodore Dubosq, a Philadelphia jeweler who traveled to California during the Gold Rush, established a coining operation that produced $5 and $10 gold pieces during 1849-1850. The firm's coins, measuring 21.6 mm in diameter for the five-dollar pieces, feature designs that reflect the professional standards of a trained Philadelphia goldsmith — somewhat more refined than the cruder products of less experienced frontier minters. Dubosq's Philadelphia background likely provided him with familiarity with die-cutting, medal-making, and metalworking techniques that informed the quality of his California production. The extremely limited survival rate of Dubosq & Company coins suggests either a very small production run or extensive melting when the San Francisco Mint opened in 1854 and private gold coins were no longer needed. Within the California Gold (1849-1855) series, Dubosq & Company pieces represent the contribution of Eastern craft expertise to the improvisational monetary economy of Gold Rush California. A notable auction result reached $480K in MS60 grade at Heritage Auctions, placing Dubosq gold among the most valuable American coins and reflecting the intensity of competition among advanced collectors for the rarest California private gold issues.
