Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This copper token from Sage's Historical series honors Charles I. Bushnell, one of the most important early American numismatists and the author of "An Arrangement of Tradesmen's Cards, Political Tokens, Also Election Medals, Medalets, &c. Current in the United States of America" published in 1858. Bushnell's pioneering catalog was the first comprehensive reference work on American tokens and medals, establishing the foundation for all subsequent numismatic scholarship in the field. His appearance on token number 1 in Sage's series reflects his stature within the tight-knit community of New York numismatists during the 1850s and 1860s. Bushnell was also a notable collector whose holdings eventually formed part of major institutional collections. This copper striking is the standard metal for the series, produced in larger quantities than the brass or white metal variants.
