About This Coin
August Bechtler inherited the family minting business in Rutherfordton, North Carolina following his father Christopher's death in 1842, producing gold dollar coins that circulated alongside federal issues in the Southern gold belt during the 1840s and 1850s. His pieces are scarcer than Christopher's, reflecting smaller production volume and the declining viability of Southern gold mining as California's richer deposits drew miners westward after 1848. A notable result of $21,000 in MS60 at Heritage Auctions demonstrates consistent demand. August's coins bear the "A. BECHTLER" inscription distinguishing them from Christopher's "C. BECHTLER" issues. The one-dollar denomination matched the federal gold dollar Congress authorized in 1849, though the Bechtler version predated it by nearly a decade. These pieces document the final chapter of the Bechtler dynasty, which ended in the early 1850s as the Charlotte and Dahlonega branch mints, combined with the California gold rush's economic impact, eliminated the rationale for private gold coinage in the Carolinas.
