Description
First documented die clash and atypical die clash variety for the 2026 Philadelphia Enduring Liberty Half Dollar, one of the Semiquincentennial circulating commemorative designs marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. Very strong obverse and reverse die clashing is evident, where the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them, transferring incuse impressions of each die's design onto the opposing die face. The "atypical" designation indicates the clash occurred with the dies in an abnormal orientation or under unusual mechanical conditions, producing transfer marks in non-standard positions relative to the normal striking alignment. As a 2026 issue, this variety was identified during the first year of production for a design that will see limited circulation life as a commemorative rather than a continuing series. The ADC 001 attribution establishes this as the earliest-cataloged atypical die clash for the Enduring Liberty design, providing the baseline reference for any subsequent die clash varieties identified on this issue.
