Description

Second in the doubled die reverse catalog for the 2024 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent, VDDR-002 displays medium spread in the North direction on central banner stripes 5, 7, 9, and 11 of the Union Shield designed by Lyndall Bass. North-direction spread shifts the secondary image upward, and the selective appearance on alternating stripes — odd-numbered stripes among the central group — creates a diagnostic pattern where doubled stripes alternate with unaffected ones. The Union Shield reverse, introduced in 2010 to replace the Lincoln Memorial, features thirteen vertical stripes representing the original colonies, topped by a scroll bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM. Medium classification indicates the spread is visible under standard magnification. The affected stripes sit in the shield's central region, accessible for examination with a standard loupe. Three die stages document the die through Early, Mid, and Late Die State. The 2024 Lincoln cent was struck in copper-plated zinc at Philadelphia. As a recent-date variety, VDDR-002 demonstrates that hub doubling continues in modern Mint production despite advances in die-making technology.
