Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as the second doubled die reverse discovered for the 2023 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield cent, VDDR-002 was struck from a separate working die that received the same doubled hub impression as VDDR-001. Both varieties display medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the JFM initials of sculptor Joseph F. Menna, confirming they share a common doubled hub. However, because each working die is an individual steel cylinder with its own unique surface characteristics, die-specific markers — including scratches, gouges, and polishing lines acquired during die manufacture and use — distinguish VDDR-002 from its predecessor. Collectors differentiating between the two rely on these incidental die markers rather than the doubling pattern itself, since both dies inherited identical hub doubling. Confirmed at Early Die State, VDDR-002 demonstrates how a single misaligned hub can propagate its doubling across multiple working dies in a production run.
