Description
The first cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2023 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield cent, VDDR-001 shows medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and on the JFM designer initials of sculptor Joseph F. Menna. Confirmed at Early Die State, this variety represents the initial discovery among what would become multiple doubled reverse dies for the 2023 cent production run. The Shield cent reverse, introduced in 2010, features a prominent Union shield with banner and inscriptions arranged around the periphery, providing ample opportunity for hub doubling to manifest in the lettering. Medium spread across the full UNITED STATES OF AMERICA legend indicates a substantial misalignment during the hubbing process, making this variety relatively straightforward to identify. As the VDDR-001 designation indicates, this was the earliest die in the series to be reported and cataloged by VarietyVista.
