Description

As the first doubled die reverse catalogued in the Wexler Doubled Die Files for the 2023 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent — cross-referenced as 2023 1c WDDR-001 — this variety bears significance as a flagship attribution for its date. The obverse die carries substantial diagnostic markers: a heavy die gouge sits well southeast of IN; a horizontal die crack runs across the top of the eyebrow, turning north, splitting, and extending through the front of the forehead toward the hairline with two small die chips within the crack; and a curving die crack follows the top of the hair below WE. These features allow confident die attribution independent of the reverse. The reverse displays die gouges under ST in STATES, a light die crack across the top of the shield above EPL, and a light die crack on the left side of the O in ONE that runs southeast through the corner of the scroll. The Lincoln Shield reverse, designed by Lyndall Bass and introduced in 2010, replaced the Memorial reverse after fifty years. Reversed hub doubling on Shield cents is actively catalogued, and WDDR-001 for any date represents the lead attribution in that year's reference sequence.
