The gold coin in the Purple Heart program, this $5 piece connects the modern Purple Heart to its origins as George Washington's Badge of Military Merit in 1782. The obverse features the Purple Heart medal with George Washington's bust, inscribed 'A Grateful Nation Honors and Remembers', while the reverse displays George Washington's signature under the Badge of Military Merit, inscribed '1782 Badge of Military Merit'.
