Description
The 2022 (W) National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 50,000 examples. The gold coin in the Purple Heart program, this $5 piece connects the modern Purple Heart to its origins as George Washington's Badge of Military Merit in 1782. The obverse features the Purple Heart medal with George Washington's bust, inscribed 'A Grateful Nation Honors and Remembers', while the reverse displays George Washington's signature under the Badge of Military Merit, inscribed '1782 Badge of Military Merit'. Designed by Donna Weaver, Joseph Menna and John P. McGraw. Struck in 90% gold 6% silver 4, 21.6 mm in diameter. Cataloged as PCGS #906288. The Purple Heart $5 gold traces the decoration's lineage to Washington himself, connecting Revolutionary War heroism to modern military sacrifice.
