Description

Appearing on the Crossing the Delaware quarter, this fifth VarietyVista-cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2021 Philadelphia Mint issue shows a light spread to the northwest, visible as an extra bottom of Washington's cuff on the reverse depicting General Washington's famous 1776 crossing of the Delaware River. The Crossing the Delaware reverse, designed by Benjamin Sowards, shows Washington standing in a Durham boat with soldiers rowing through ice-choked waters — and the general's cuff detail provided a crisp element where the northwest hub displacement produced detectable doubling. Carrying pending catalog codes UVC-???? and DMR-00?, the variety is tracked at Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed) and Stage B where the reverse is in early-to-mid die state with a die chip on the back of Washington's bust. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. The die chip on the bust serves as a useful secondary attribution marker. The 2021 quarter was a transitional year featuring both the final America the Beautiful design (Tuskegee Airmen) and the Crossing the Delaware design, making it a two-design date of interest to variety specialists.
