As the premiere DDR for this Kansas-themed design, it represents the initial documented hub doubling event on the reverse of what was the final-year design cycle of the America the Beautiful Quarters program. The Tallgrass Prairie reverse, designed by Christina Hess, depicts the Flint Hills ecosystem with a bison walking through tall grasses — a scene rich in organic textures including grass blades, bison fur, and rolling prairie terrain that can capture hub displacement as doubled contours in the fine natural detail. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in the Kansas Flint Hills protects one of the last remaining stretches of intact tallgrass prairie in North America.
