2020 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

On the Salt River Bay National Historical Park quarter — honoring a site in the U.S. Virgin Islands where Columbus's crew encountered the Kalinago people in 1493 — this WDDR-004 presents a partial extra root visible to the left of the knotted upper root in the reverse design's mangrove tree. The mangrove roots, rendered in detailed relief, depict the tangled root systems characteristic of the coastal ecosystems that define Salt River Bay's shoreline. Hub displacement during die preparation created a ghost image of one root slightly offset from its intended position, producing what appears to be an additional root alongside the primary knotted formation. Assigned the Wexler designation 2020-P 25c VI WDDR-004 and cross-referenced with VarietyVista as VDDR-004, this variety carries no significant die markers beyond the doubling itself, placing the full attribution burden on identifying the extra root feature. The Salt River Bay quarter was part of the final stretch of the America the Beautiful program, and doubled die varieties on these later issues benefit from the heightened attention that variety collectors devoted to the program's closing years of production.
