2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Targeting one of the most compact design elements on the Lincoln Shield Cent reverse, the 2019 WDDR-005 exhibits extra thickness on the designer's initials JFM — the monogram of Joseph F. Menna, who sculpted the Union Shield reverse introduced in 2010. Because these initials are engraved at a very small scale, even slight hub displacement produces visible broadening that can be detected under moderate magnification. A useful die marker accompanies this variety: a die chip sits on the top left of the shield, positioned north of the UR in PLURIBUS, providing a secondary confirmation point independent of the doubling itself. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. Attributed by the Wexler Team under variety ID 2019 1c WDDR-005, no cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams, this regular strike belongs to the modern Shield Cent series that replaced the Lincoln Memorial reverse after 2008. To identify this variety, first locate the JFM initials on the lower right portion of the reverse and examine them for the telltale extra thickness, then verify the die chip on the shield above UR in PLURIBUS as a confirming marker.
