2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Carrying dual attribution as both a doubled die reverse and a doubled die obverse (WDDO-008), this 2019 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent is a rare coin exhibiting hub misalignment on both sides. On the obverse, extra thickness appears on the LIBERTY letters, with the Y noticeably thicker on the upper left than the upper right — an asymmetric thickening characteristic of certain doubling classes. The reverse doubling that earns the WDDR-001 designation is the primary cataloged variety, while the WDDO-008 obverse doubling provides additional collector interest as a companion variety on the same coin. Having both obverse and reverse doubling from the same die pair is uncommon because it requires misalignment to have occurred during die production on both sides independently. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2019 1¢ WDDR-001, this first DDR for the date carries Lyndall Bass's shield reverse design introduced in 2010. Cherrypickers should examine LIBERTY for the asymmetric Y thickening on the obverse and check the reverse for the primary doubling that defines this dual-attribution variety. A small die gouge can be found inside the upper Y of LIBERTY. Reverse: A die chip can be found on the top left of the shield north of the P in PLURIBUS.
