2018 VDDR VDDR-004

Description

On the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge quarter, the 2018 VDDR-004 shows light spread northeast producing extra tips on feathers number 7 and 8 from the bottom of the bird design. Carrying provisional catalog codes UVC-???? and DMR-00? pending formal assignment, three die stages trace the die's working life. Stage A places both the reverse and obverse at early die state. Stage B advances to early-to-mid die state, identifiable by a die crack developing between the topmost feathers on the reverse, with the obverse also at EMDS. Stage C represents an unconfirmed late die state. The feather-tip doubling, while light in spread, appears at a location where collectors naturally focus attention on the Block Island design—the detailed plumage of the depicted bird. The Stage B die crack between the topmost feathers is well positioned to serve as both a die-state indicator and a secondary diagnostic for attribution. Collectors should note the provisional UVC and DMR codes, which await formal catalog assignment.
