Description

The 2017 (P) George Rogers Clark National Park Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a quarter in the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 196.6 million examples, making this ranked 9th of 15 mint variants by mintage, with 9% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts Colonel Clark and his frontiersmen wading through flooded bottomlands approaching Fort Sackville. The 1779 capture of Fort Sackville was a daring campaign that secured the Northwest Territory for the young United States. Effigy Mounds (IA), Frederick Douglass (DC), Ozark Riverways (MO), Ellis Island (NJ), and George Rogers Clark (IN) were honored. Frederick Douglass was the first non-site coin, honoring the abolitionist at his Washington D.C. historic site.
