Description

Honoring Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the badlands of western North Dakota, this 2016 Philadelphia Mint America the Beautiful quarter carries a doubled die reverse attributed as the second such variety for the design. The reverse depicts a scene from the Elkhorn Ranch unit, showing the rugged landscape that inspired the twenty-sixth president's conservation legacy — Roosevelt's ranching experience in the Dakota Territory during the 1880s shaped his commitment to preserving wild places. Hub misalignment during die preparation produced visible doubling on the reverse, cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2016-P 25c ND WDDR-002, with the ND code designating North Dakota. As only the second documented DDR for this design, WDDR-002 suggests either fewer dies were produced for this issue or the design's topography made doubling less visually apparent. The Theodore Roosevelt quarter was the fourth of five 2016 ATB designs, and the park itself was not formally established until 1978, making it one of the newer National Park units honored on American coinage.
