2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
ErrorDescription
Showing extra thickness on the designer initials LB and JFM, WDDR-002 on the 2016-P Lincoln Shield Cent preserves doubling evidence on the very letters that credit the coin's designers—LB for Lyndall Bass (reverse) and JFM for Joseph F. Menna (obverse engraver). Die markers on the obverse include a small die gouge to the left of the back of Lincoln's head. Reverse markers include a die crack across the top left of the shield with a small die chip north of the L in PLURIBUS. Cross-reference: Wexler Variety ID: 2016 1¢ WDDR-002. Attributed by Wexler Team. Philadelphia Mint regular strike. Doubled dies affecting designer initials are a recurring theme across U.S. coin varieties because these small, incuse elements are particularly sensitive to even minor hub misalignment—the fine lines of the initials reveal doubling that might be invisible on larger design elements. The accompanying die crack and chip on this die suggest it was used well into its working life, providing multiple diagnostics for attribution beyond the doubling itself.
