Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2015-P 25-cent NY WDDR-013, this America the Beautiful Quarter doubled die reverse features doubling inside the lower right opening in the handle of General Burgoyne's sword on the Saratoga National Historical Park reverse, commemorating the 1777 British surrender during the American Revolution. The ATB Quarter is struck in cupronickel-clad composition at 5.67 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. No other cross-references are known beyond the Wexler designation. Die markers on the obverse include a short die crack across the base of the bust, a small die gouge above the right side of the D in UNITED, and a die gouge touching the inner left side of the Q in QUARTER. The reverse shows strong northwest-to-southeast die scratches between the designer's initials RG and the numeral 1 in 1777, plus two small die gouges between the S and U in SURRENDER. The sword handle detail where the doubling manifests is a fine design element requiring careful magnified examination. The extensive die markers on both sides — particularly the unusual directional die scratches near the designer's initials — provide strong authentication diagnostics for confirming this specific die pair.
