2014-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
Discovered by Jessy Gozum, this Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel represents the first cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2014-D date. Class VIII, Tilted Hub Doubling. Class VIII doubling shows below the door frame and above the steps of Felix Schlag's Monticello design, where the tilted hub impression created a secondary image offset at an angle from the primary strike. Wexler Variety ID: 2014-D WDDR-001. A die dot above the M of MONTICELLO serves as the primary die marker for attribution, providing a fixed reference point that distinguishes this specific working die from all others used in 2014-D nickel production. Tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub is not perfectly aligned parallel to the working die during the hubbing process — even a slight angular tilt produces doubling that increases in magnitude with distance from the pivot point. The Monticello reverse, which served the Jefferson Nickel from 1938 through 2003 and returned in 2006, provides familiar design elements against which collectors can readily identify doubling.
