2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2013-P 25c SD WDDR-008, this America the Beautiful Quarter doubled die reverse shows doubling on the middle of Thomas Jefferson's nose — a precise and localized manifestation of hub misalignment on the Mount Rushmore (South Dakota) reverse design. The "SD" designation identifies this as the South Dakota quarter within the 2013 ATB program, which featured five national sites annually. The Mount Rushmore reverse depicts the carved presidential portraits, and hub doubling on Jefferson's nose — one of the most recognizable features of the monument — creates a diagnostic that experienced collectors can locate by examining the contour of the nose for a secondary outline or extra thickness. A die chip just above the right eye of Jefferson on the reverse provides a secondary attribution marker. Submitted by Donna Rudak, the variety was documented with no known cross-references beyond the Wexler designation. The obverse and reverse carry no other significant markers. The America the Beautiful Quarters program, which ran from 2010 through 2021, produced five unique reverse designs each year at both Philadelphia and Denver, creating a vast landscape for die variety research. Eight doubled die reverses documented for the 2013-P South Dakota quarter reflects the systematic examination that ATB quarters received from variety specialists who recognized the program's diversity of designs as an opportunity for new discoveries. The figurative designs on ATB reverses — depicting monuments, wildlife, landscapes, and historical scenes — offer different doubling diagnostic opportunities compared to the traditional eagle-and-shield or wreath designs found on most U.S. coinage, and the sculptural precision of the Mount Rushmore design makes nose-area doubling particularly detectable.
