2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

Joseph Menna's sculptural interpretation of Mount Rushmore for the 2013 ATB Quarter reverse presented die makers with one of the program's most detailed designs, and this complexity contributed to the extraordinary number of doubled die varieties cataloged for the Philadelphia Mint issue, including WDDR-006. Transferring Menna's design through reduction, master die, master hub, working hub, and finally to working dies involved multiple stages where slight misalignment could introduce doubling. Each stage represented an opportunity for the positional error that creates a doubled die variety. Mount Rushmore's four presidential visages, carved from the granite of the Black Hills between 1927 and 1941, provided an abundance of fine detail on the quarter's reverse that makes even minor doubling detectable under magnification.
