2013 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-007 under Universal Variety Code UVC-2392, this doubled die reverse was discovered on a 2013 America the Beautiful quarter. Like the related DDR-003, this variety shows doubling on Jefferson's nose on the Mount Rushmore National Memorial design, but with a medium spread westward rather than the strong spread of DDR-003, indicating a less pronounced hub displacement event on this particular die. Die marker records tracked under DMR-008 document three stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where a light die crack develops north from the suspended worker's foot with the obverse in mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The shared die crack location at the suspended worker's foot between DDR-003 and DDR-007 suggests this area of the Mount Rushmore design was particularly susceptible to stress fracturing during production. The 2013 ATB quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad composition at 5.67 grams and 24.26 mm diameter. The America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series rotated through five unique reverse designs annually, with each design produced at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The Mount Rushmore design's intricate sculptural detail, representing four presidential faces carved into granite, provided design elements with sufficient fine detail to reveal medium-strength hub displacement that might go unnoticed on simpler, bolder designs. VarietyVista's documentation of at least seven DDR varieties for this issue indicates thorough specialist examination of the 2013 Mount Rushmore quarter production.
