Description

Bearing the primary DDR designation for the 2013 Mount Rushmore National Memorial Quarter, DDR-001 shows strong spread in the westward direction on the middle of Jefferson's nose — referring not to the obverse portrait but to the carved likeness of Thomas Jefferson on the Mount Rushmore monument depicted on this America the Beautiful (ATB) series reverse. The reverse design, sculpted by Joseph Menna, features the four presidential faces carved into the granite of the Black Hills in South Dakota, and the fine detail of the carved noses proved particularly susceptible to visible hub displacement. Three die stages are documented under catalog codes UVC-2016 and DMR-002. Stage A records both the reverse and obverse in early die state, confirming the spread was present from the die's initial production. Stages B and C at mid and late die state remain unconfirmed. Cataloged by VarietyVista, this Philadelphia Mint copper-nickel clad quarter is distinguished from the companion DDR-002 (which shares the same spread location) by its unique die identification: UVC-2016 and DMR-002, confirming it as a completely different working die from DDR-002's UVC-2104 and DMR-003.
